What is Model UN?
Model United Nations is a simulation of the real United Nations.
Delegates represent a country and research the background of their country, their country's position on the topics at hand, and prepare notes on possible solutions to the problems faced. Students then convene at Model UN conferences, which range in size from 100 to 5,000 delegates, to debate their assigned topics with students representing the other UN member states. Much like the real UN, the goal is to identify solutions, by negotiation and consensus, on which many countries can agree.
Today, many MUN conferences hold simulations that are not UN committees. In addition to simulations of the Security Council and General Assembly, many conferences are running simulations of the US National Security Council, where delegates represent President Bush and Condoleezza Rice. Many conferences feature a Joint Cabinet Crisis, where two or more committees of delegates are linked together, and the actions taken in one committee affect the other.
Why MUN?
Model UN is a way to become an active, more concerned global citizen, while building confidence, leadership and diplomatic skills.
How Do I Get Involved?
The best way to get involved as a first-timer is to attend a mini-MUN, run by the UNSW UN Society on campus throughout the semester.
However, you can attend any conference, domestic or international, as a first-time MUN'er. Our society provides various training opportunities for delegates in the lead up to conferences and you'll be supported by more experienced members throughout the way.
