Model United Nations is a simulation of the real United Nations. Delegates research and represent a country by preparing notes on possible solutions to the problems faced. Students then convene at Model UN conferences, which range in size from 100 to 5,000 delegates, to debate their assigned topics with students representing the other UN member states. Much like the real UN, the goal is to identify solutions, by negotiation and consensus, on which many countries can agree.

Model UN is a way to become an active, more concerned global citizen, while building confidence, leadership and diplomatic skills. Competitors engage with complex international issues and are challenged to consider perspectives beyond their own, while working collaboratively to negotiate resolutions and reach consensus. It also provides an opportunity to explore areas of international affairs, politics and law that students may not yet encounter in their formal studies.

Our society’s strong competitive focus is underscored by our consistent domination within the domestic MUN sphere, consistently winning awards at Australian MUN competitions. On the international competition level, UNSW is often the only Australian university in attendance at the world’s most prestigious MUN conferences.
