Every year, the UNSW United Nations Society sends teams to model UN conferences around the world!
AMUNC
Created in 1995 by our very own society, the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference is an annual event during the mid-year recess that gathers students from the region to participate in a model UN. Run by students for students, the conference consists of around 25 committees and is held in a different city in the region every year. What distinguishes AMUNC most from other model UN conferences is its committee sizes. Committees at AMUNC are smaller than in many others, often around 25 – 30 members. Countries are represented by individual delegates instead of pairs. This means that each individual is given a much greater opportunity to engage in committee sessions and play a larger role in forming resolutions. AMUNC is an innovative conference that has incorporated new committees into the forum every year, such as supranational bodies like the European Commission, African Union and the Senior Management Committee. Our society has been well represented at this conference ever since its inception, sending more than 50 students to the host city in recent years and earning awards like the Best Large Delegation Award in 2011. The combination of intimate committees and nightly socials makes AMUNC an annual event for our society.
National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN), New York City
Held annually in New York each April, the National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN) attracts more than 5000 university students from over 39 countries, making it one of the largest and most prestigious conferences of its kind. With committee sessions sometimes running well into the evening, NMUN’s intensive format offers delegates a unique taste of the world of diplomacy. Outside committee sessions the bright lights of New York City await, giving delegates the chance to explore the city’s world class museums, art galleries, restaurants and shopping. On the last day of formal committee sessions, delegates have the once in a lifetime opportunity of debating their resolutions at the real United Nations Headquarters. In 2012 the UNSW UN Society sent the first Australian delegation to the conference and came away winning numerous awards, including the Outstanding Delegation Award for representing HK, China on APEC and the Distinguished Delegation Award for its representation of Saudi Arabia in numerous committees. Read more about UNSoc’s adventures in the Big Apple on the UNSW Law Faculty website. In 2013 we returned, and in 2014 we won the Distinguished Delegation Award representing the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. After the 2015 NMUN Conference, Team UNSW returned with 6 Best Position Paper Awards and a Honourable Mention Award for the entire delegation.
WorldMUN
World MUN brings together delegates more than 2,200 delegates from over 65 countries across the globe, making it the world’s premier international Model UN Conference. Run by Harvard University, World MUN was founded in 1991 by several Harvard students who were looking to create a unique, truly global Model United Nations experience. World MUN aims to offer youth from around the world with a space to articulate their views on international issues, and to develop networks spanning borders that will enable these future leaders to transform their ideas into action. After-hours, delegates get to immerse themselves in the culture and nightlife of the host city – socialising, dancing and enjoying a cocktail or two with fellow delegates from all over the world.
